I always thought it merely meant white or caucasian, but it is indeed a disparaging word. I'll keep an ear open, as we have three Mexican restaurants in our town, and I believe I have been addressed as Gringa in at least one of them before. I also don't know the figures, but I don't doubt that Latinos could conceivably become the majority by the dates you mentioned. What I am most curious to know is how and if our nation's laws will protect all Americans from discrimination and whether with more and better education, their prejudices, bias's and racism will eventually be lessened or eliminated? Because of our system of laws the possibility to change these kinds of attitudes can be dealt with as they have in the past. Last year I had a former Marine tell me that upon being discharged from the military, he looked for a job in Yakima, Washington. He wasn't able to find work because he didn't speak Spanish. He ended up coming to Seattle and finding work here, so this kind of discrimination is growing nationwide. I expect the laws of our nation to apply equally across the board and I told him it sounded pretty un-American to me, and that he could possibly have the bases for a law suit. I'm no Attorney and I could be wrong, but it doesn't matter because he was in no position to file a law suit. Eventually, I expect tensions to rise, especially between Blacks and Latinos. This will become a national issue that no one will be able to ignore. Then the laws of our land will be shown to newcomers, they will learn, and they will have the choice to assimilate or not. ;) M
