"There are many reasons to work toward conservation- only one of them is that it might help prevent catastrophic climate change (which may or may not happen, and even if it does happen may or may not be caused by humans.) "

Peak oil is a pretty good reason, too.

There are clearly a variety of different motives behind the "dont't get it" crowd. The two which are the least acceptable are (1) this is all a left wing conspiracy and (2) I'm making money right now and don't wish to be bothered. Well, and then there's (3) I'm making money right now and I wish to make certain all the talk of global warming doesn't undercut it.

At one level, the global warming debate and alarms are what they are and will become what they will become. It's simply unfortunate and beyond (morally culpable) for the debates to be so politicized.

I think you can embrace the unknowns and STILL do something about the environment

If the something comes at a reasonably low cost to wealth and freedom than yes you can do something about it, esp. if the something is easily reversible should earlier projections prove to be very wrong. OTOH taking massively expensive measures probably isn't called for with the current level of unknown, esp. if part of what is unknown is whether the measures will be either necessary or sufficient to deal with the problem (assuming the problem is as bad as some people claim).
