Japan attacked us. We committed atrocities to defeat them. Vietnam did not attack us. We committed atrocities and could not defeat them. Iraq did not attack us. We are committing atrocities in Iraq and have at this point not been able to defeat them.

All three wars included atrocities. We have killed millions and millions and millions. When we target women and children, there is no way to wash our hands clean after the fact. At least in the case of Japan we were finishing what they started -- not an excuse for atrocities, but somehow just a bit less disgusting. In Vietnam there was no fig leaf -- just millions dead. Iraq is taking us down the same road, except now we have 'leaders' who look for every opportunity to attack American values of decency and freedom from torture and othe manner of illegal and immoral acts.
