The rightwing hates McCain. Listen to Anne Corrigan over on her smear thread. McCain is a moderate, though he is pandering to the rightwing now. Remember, Bushies ran the same type evil smear campaign against McCain's military record in 2000 that they did against Kerry in 2004, engineered by many of the same behind the scenes dirty tricksters.
