I'm often asked for recommendations re: judicial candidates.
Sometimes I can't even identify the better candidate so
I must revert to generalized criteria.

In the 1980's, a number of CA State Supreme Court justices
were not confirmed (they face confirmation by the voters every 12 years, as opposed to elections). Chief Justice Rose
Bird was the prime target. The basis for the campaign against her was her decisions on the death penalty (anti). Her liberal bent also animated decisions in the civil arena, e.g. in the area of insurance company liability for bad faith.

I suspect it was the latter which provoked the campaign against her with the death penalty issues receiving prominent
play as a way to sway public opinion.
