"Remember Spiro Agnew." Yes. He got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Rather than face trial, Agnew resigned and entered a plea of no contest to charges of evading income tax. "Nolo contendere" is Latin and literally means "I do not wish to contend." Spiro Agnew approximated it as "I didn't do it, but I'll never do it again." In making such a plea, a defendant accepts that he or she may be found guilty by the court without ever admitting to the act(s) charged. Spiro made a quick exit from politics with little tadoo over the whole thing. Anti-War protesters during VietNam celebrated the demise of their staunchest critic but that was about it. Which is one reason why young history students probably wouldn't know what you mean by that comment. That is exactly what any politician should do when a question of honor or cover up is raised and there is any merit to the allegation. We don't even expect our politicians to stand on their honor these days, that would be abnormal in modern times ... which is truly a loss for our society. The closest we have come to that was when Clinton tightened his usually curled lower lip and raised his finger in the now famous declaration that was the beginning of the end for the man with no honor.
