To then extrapolate it to say 'this is the opinion there' is stretching credibility.

That's the whole concept behind polling, that you can get a representative opinion with a small sample. That's what the margin of error is for, and the margin of error on samples that size is pretty good. It's not perfect, but for perfect you'd need to hold a referendum. The marginal value of perfection is, er, marginal.

Margin of error is independent of population size for large populations. The M of E is the same for 1,000,000 or 1.2 billion.
