I can't really agree that the US is well on its way to bankruptcy. To problems yes, arguably severe problems, but anything resembling bankruptcy is very far away.

The current trajectory should move us to within striking distance of bankruptcy as a country within fifty years. Events between now and then can shorten or lengthen that amount of time. I cannot realistically see us going bankrupt for at least seventy five years. It should cause the fracturing of the country.

It is possible that someone will get elected President and we will get on a course towards fiscal responsibility. Or... After you remember the Alamo, remember the USSR.
