Brazil’s Vale do Rio Doce to build railroad from Mozambique to Malawi [ 2006-06-13 ]

Maputo, Mozambique, 13 June – Brazilian mining company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) plans to build 200 kilometers of railroad next year linking the Moatize coal mines, in northeastern Mozambique, to Lirangwe, in Malawi, the company said.

Malcolm Murray, the man responsible for building the infrastructure, told Portuguese news agency Lusa that building the railroad would open up another way of distributing the coal from Moatize, the concession for which was granted by the Mozambican government to the Brazilian mining giant in 2005.

“CVRD will export coal from Moatize to several parts of the world, which justifies the viability of a Moatize-Lirangwe railroad,” Murray said while presenting the project in Blantyre, the economic capital of Malawi.

Murray added that, “before begin exploration of coal at Moatize, CVRD needs to improve the transport system between the mining area and the means by which the coal will be transported.

As well as this new route, making use of the coal at Moatize also requires the rehabilitation of the Moatize railroad, which links the mine to Beira Port, in central Mozambique.

CVRD expects to invest over 794 million euros in setting up the conditions for mining coal at Moatize, as part of the concession deal signed with the Mozambican government.
