I knew someone who was killed in a skiing accident. He was a biologist, if memory serves, but I remember him as one of the most prolific wildlife photographers ever. I've seen his shows where he had picture after picture, closeups of animals that were so outstanding and so numerous that it almost got boring.

He was skiing up at Big Mountain and tried to go around both sides of a tree.

When I was just starting trapping in the high country, my friend and I started horsing around on our snowshoes. His dad, who was teaching us to trap, put a stop to that right away. When you're out that far, there's nobody to help you, so even a minor accident becomes potentially fatal. After that, I never had a single accident trapping.
