It will be interesting to see if McCain can define a mellower, more principled conservatism in his 2008 campaign.

Agreed. If one, however, gets a bit more specific than simply "conservatives," and notes the dilemma Republicans face, it gets a bit more interesting to me. The early twenty-first century embodiment of Republicanism is, as we all know, so heavily dependent on Christian fundamentalism and its cultural goals that "mellow" is a very difficult feat.

I have no doubt McCain's trip to Falwell's place of abode was less about signaling his support for such and more about finding room to eventually distance himself. But that's an awfully difficult political landscape to navigate.

These aren't my preferred politicians. But it will be something more than entertaining to watch.
