Simple standardized paper ballots, counted by civil servants with observers from all parties is the only way to ensure democracy. Partisan vendors of election equipment with "secret programming" must be scrapped. I don't care if it takes a week to count the ballots.

Oddly enough, I have seen that is exactly how it is done in a much younger and economically less advanced democracy like India. Paper ballots, counted by government officials with agents of the major political parties present at every table.

It takes a few days (usually much less than a week) to count the ballots. And voting fraud is much more easily detected because it has to take the form of physically capturing voting centers or booths, physically intimidating voters etc.
