I can almost look back in fondness at the Socreds because although they would would rev up the "Stop the Socialist Hordes" nonsense every election, they were willing to be socialists if that's what it took.

The WACcy Bennett-era Socreds kept ICBC and the Agricultural Land Reserve, two "commie-style" programmes begun by the Barrett NDP government that have proven to be immensely successful and popular. They were also willing to embark on massive commie-style public works programmes like building the ferry system and the highway network.

Today's Bush/Harper-style neo-liberals are hamstrung by their obeisance to their ideology, and will stick with it even if it drives their country to ruin (in Bush's case esp. as long as it makes his rich buddies even richer).

Last month, Bush was asked by a reporter from the German rag Der Stern what his best moment in office has been. His response -- catching a really big fish in a pond on his ranch.

I agree.
