That is going to least detract from your support base numbers. A true conservative group would support or espouse a seemingly radical set of lean and mean government policies that favour the rugged individualist and independent citizen, who, paradoxically, wants a greater individual voice in government, greater local autonomy, and more freedom from government intervention at the same time. The liberal-socialist-democrat set tend to hew to group-think, and rely on set-policy "eggs" armoured by motherhood shells and warm and fuzzy coatings. This makes the set-piece components of policy and strategy unassailable from both their enemies those who flock to government as their succour and shelter from the big bad world as well as the teat that feeds them. These impenetrable policy-eggs are dangerous to attack without making one seem to be a wild-eyed fanatic who would steal food from the mouths of babes and plot anarchy within the womb of a nurturing benevolent society. To show them for fraud is a difficult task. It is like making Santa Claus a dirty, lying cheat. On the other hand the conservative groups build their own set pieces that they believe are rock-hard. They don't always seem to sell as well. The need to own a shotgun does not resonate with the city-dweller-yuppie whose only vision of a weapon is made from what he sees on CSI:Miami or what he fears he might see in the hands of a desperate have-not some late nite feverishly importunating the clerk to review the assets of his corner store register. Unfortunately it is hard to build icons of frontier independence amongst a society that has fled one corrupt social herd structure to embrace another even more mothering maw that promises more respite, more wealth and more general bliss from the overwhelming firmness of its embrace. The newer citizen returns to a hive eerily similar to the one from whence he came, albeit with a much better story about honey and flowers. If only he beat his wings just as hard, and fly a bit faster, he will enjoy many times the flow of honey and fewer bears to boot. EC<:-}
