Should I infer that you don't have an answer to my question: what's the difference between a "knock" and an "announcement"?

Re forced entry, I didn't understand that to be the issue, only the knock part. I guess I should read before I comment further.

Let me take a shot at an answer, Dale. Though I reserve the right to change my mind once I've read more.

Your scenario presumes two things: a righteous police force and a guilty home owner. If you drop a different scenario into the picture, a police force which makes a mistake or one that has other than righteous motives, and the standard issue citizen, guilty of no large sins, only the customary small ones, the "knock" rule, evidently, a very long standing rule, provides some small protection.
