"From what I am reading, there are many like Harris. That's why the public outcry is so muted." I think it's fear. The idea of an enemy that believes in something SO strongly they are willing to spend their life on it is an alien and fearfully disturbing concept for Americans, who don't believe in anything that powerfully. So, they think that we have to respond more harshly to these than previous enemies, with torture. I'm sure Cheney and the chimp Caesar believe that - THEY'D never chumpishly blow themselves up for some belief!
