What a game today...beautiful sunny weather with a nice breeze from the southwest -- They were selling LOTS of ice cold beer at Wrigley Field too...Yet, the Cubs just can't seem to get any traction and The Tigers took care of business...My friend Cindy and I really enjoyed the baseball game and then hiked over to lake Michigan and then on down to a great rustic Italian restaurant in Lincoln Park for a relaxing dinner.

Jim Leyland's team continues to demonstrate that they know how to play good fundamental baseball...They capitalize on opportunities and seem to really enjoy their time on the field...

Tigers pummel struggling Cubs

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Justin Verlander pitched 5 2/3 solid innings and the middle of the Detroit order provided plenty of punch, as the Tigers pounded the slumping Chicago Cubs, 9-3, in the middle contest of a three-game interleague series at Wrigley Field.

Verlander (8-4) gave up just one run on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts while picking up his first victory in over two weeks.

Magglio Ordonez doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice while Carlos Guillen belted a two-run homer and scored twice. Placido Polanco finished 3- for-5 with three runs scored for Detroit, winners in three straight games.

Carlos Marmol (1-1) couldn't back up a dominating performance in his first major league start, yielding four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Aramis Ramirez ended 3-for-5 with an RBI and Jacque Jones also recorded three hits for the Cubs, who have dropped five games in a row.

"We are getting hits. We just aren't getting them when they count," said Cubs manager Dusty Baker. "They beat us up pretty well."

The Tigers quickly jumped on the 23-year-old Marmol in the first inning for three runs. Curtis Granderson drove a 2-1 offering down into the right-field corner for a leadoff triple and scored on Polanco's single to center.

Guillen then drove Polanco home with a two-out home run that was hit on a rope over the right-field fence.

Chicago got one of the runs back in the home half of the second behind three consecutive hits. Jones singled to right then John Mabry followed with a double. Ronny Cedeno brought Jones home with a single to center.

Detroit regained the three-run advantage in the third as Polanco got the threat started with a double down the left-field line. The second baseman came around to score on Ordonez's base hit back through the middle.

The game turned into a rout in the top of the eighth frame. Ordonez singled with one out and advanced to second on Guillen's base hit. Omar Infante then delivered the big blow, knocking in both runners with a triple out of the reach of Juan Pierre in center field.

Chris Shelton followed with a single to left, scoring Infante for a 7-1 advantage.

Detroit struck for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to roll up a 9-1 edge. Polanco singled and scored on Ordonez's double then Guillen followed with a run-scoring ground-rule double.

The Cubs tallied two runs in bottom of the frame on an RBI double by Ramirez and a run-scoring single by Phil Nevin.

Game Notes

The Tigers totaled seven extra base hits...Detroit starting pitcher Kenny Rogers looks for his 10th victory of the season on Sunday. He will be opposed by Mark Prior, who will make his first start of the 2006 season after dealing with a strained shoulder. "It will be a tremendous boost," said Baker.
