the fax suggested everything was on the table — including full cooperation on nuclear programs, acceptance of Israel and the termination of Iranian support for Palestinian militant groups.

Which is why they elected Ahmadinejad, a man with intricate and long-term ties to the IRGC and the Basij was "elected" while the reformists were prevented from posting candidates?

Can anyone really assert realistically that such a proposal was credible when Iranian intelligence was effectively able to initiate a coup that countered any reformist agenda (and assumably, reapproachment with the US).

Come on now Sun Tzu.. surely even YOU are not that clueless and naive..

It's very simple for someone to "propose" talks for external political consumption, but quite another for them them to possess sufficient internal credibility to follow through on them.

You're a alleged fan of military strategy (why else would you choose that handle?) Haven't you ever heard of a "delaying tactic" aimed at lulling your enemy into a false sense of hope?

Their doing a heck of job don't you think so Sun Tzu no better enemy to have then the 'gang that can't shoot straight'..now even Rove has a shot gun to practice with the VP...lost to a bunch of farmers in Vietnam and now with over half of the world's armed power losing to people so desperate (who have almost no arms) who merely blow themselves up in the midst...I wonder how the western War history buffs write these strategies up with a straight face..but I guess you know a lot about real defensive strategies Sun Tzu!

Still hoping that Rove is off the hook because he will finger Cheney.

Iran was reacting to the US lightening victory in iraq and perhaps the fear that they might be next. Perhaps it was hubris that kept the US from the table back then--why talk to the dirty mullahs when we can drive them from power??
Fast forward to now as the past is now history. Right now i think a united iraq under this current govt is in the interests of both iran and the US. The iranians have gotten all they can from the insurgency and the destruction of bush. Sectarian civil war does neither party any good so it is time to settle up at least on iraq. For the US, peace in iraq is impossible without iranian support. Both sides have an interest in defeating both radical sunni islam and anarchy in the region. Both need to get over the past.
