"So on the whole believing is good insurance."

This sort of reasoning has me quite baffled. I'm the kind of person who believes things because my experience, senses and intelligence force me to. I can't imagine what it's like to be someone who believes something because he wants to. In fact I'm extremely sceptical that people who say this really do believe. But then, if you observe the _behaviour_ of most self-proclaimed believers, you'll notice that they don't act as if there were a God, at least not the kind they claim to believe in. In many cases you have to say that they are manifesting a belief in a rather unimpressive sort of deity, one who is easily tricked. Not too surprising, since man made gods in his image.

<A reason to believe in god might go thusly:>

All sorts of scientists even believe there is probably 'something' going on that could be called "god"...

Why one wouldn't just be honest and say "jeez, I just don't know" is beyond me. To pretend to know that 'there is no god' is just ego... just another belief system.

Now, OTOH... it makes sense to me that one would deny a certain 'defined' god that CAN be pretty much disproved.
