One of the main reasons for buying a house/apartment in England was because the rental market was such a disaster/non-existent (same in Israel and lots of subsidies to buy there for those who have the right credentials). But from what I hear recently the private rental market is getting bigger there and I have heard of fixed interest mortgages now. I came to the US and the rental market is just amazing here by comparison. (of course there was much more public housing in those countries). Australia is much more similar to the US (except that the standard mortgage model there is fixed rate for a fixed period and then reverting to the ARM default - rather than the reverse model in the US). Just interesting the very different mindsets about housing in different countries.

So having lived in all these mixed up countries I guess I have come out with a rather mixed up perspective on housing. I still enjoy being a renter.
