Also I didn't say I would or should wait until I need a gun, and since I don't need one now I won't buy one. I said I didn't anticipate a need for one. That lack of anticipation could in fact be incorrect but it has no connection with either being a smartass or thinking that people should wait until there is an immediate need for a gun to try to buy one.

Owning a firearm for self-protection is no different than buying insurance or carrying a spare tire in your car.
