>> But the people who make the cries about "root causes" think they know already, and they know wrong, since they view everything through a warmed-over Marxist lens. They insist it's poverty and colonialism even those these explanationa fail the laugh test wrt to Osama bin Laden or Ayman al Zawahiri.<<

Nadine -

Another explanation that fails the laugh test is "They hate us because they hate freedom." That's a good one. You'd think they'd have attacked The Netherlands or Sweden by now if that was the case.

It's no real trick to figure out why Al Qaeda attacked us. They've said why they did it. They've repeated their reasons ad nauseum. We support Israel at the expense of Palestinians, we keep troups in Saudi Arabia, and now, we've added to those reasons by invading two Islamic nations.

I believe the underlying reasons, though, are explained in two words: wounded pride. Bin Laden was an unimportant and uninfluential member of a very important and influential family. He's trying to prove to his dozens of brothers, uncles, and whatnot, that he's a big powerful man like they are.

This is not an issue of being a leftist or a rightist. It is an issue of being a realist. Yesterday, the US was hated and despised by the terrorists. But today, the US is hated and despised by those who were friends of the US yesterday.

How on earth could Bush-Karl Rove manage to alienate the US worldwide. Even the tsunami-devastated Indonesians refused US aid. That is how much the Us is hated and despised.

Bush kept barking all over the place on the Iran issue. But he was reduced to a non-entity while the Germans-French-Russians-Chinese and to some extent the British worked on a non-military solution in Iran. What a humiliation for Bush and the US!!

Having troops stationed in Saudi Arabia is not enough reason for OBL to hate the US? Propping the dictators in Saudi Arabia is not enough reason? What else should the US have done before OBL's anger would be justified?
