Placing many politicians on a simple one dimension left right scale can be difficult, but Bush perhaps more so than most.

I think any one dimensional political scale is going to be a gross oversimplification. Even multidimensional scales are only approximations, but I wouldn't go quite so far as to call even the one dimensional continuum totally useless.
