<<As the Nature article shows, bees also can engage in abstract thought. The creatures can "master abstract inter-relationships," specifically the cognitive concepts of "sameness" and "difference," Giurfa and his team report. Hence, "higher cognitive functions are not a privilege of vertebrates," that is, creatures with backbones and much more complex nervous systems.>>

Hmmmmmm:

<In other words, if bees -- with their relatively simple nervous systems -- can be so smart, then human intelligence might eventually be explained more easily than previously assumed.>

< selection by nature. Wonder what/who that is?>

More precisely:

1.) Wonder if "it's" intelligent.

Further:

2.) the selectee AND selector are both part of nature
3.) selectees may also be selectors and vice versa

Soooooo, if selectees and selectors are intelligent, evolution is intelligent.

Wonder what/who that is?

Natural selection is more of a process than a who or what.

When the horse Barbaro broke it's leg at the Preakness it illustrated an aspect of the process. The lighter a horse's leg, the faster it can be lifted for the next step, and the faster the horse.... but if it becomes too light it may not be strong enough to stand up to the pressure of a race.

In days past that injury would have been a selection, the horse would have died. Now that horse may have the opportunity to be prolific. Luck, timing, and opportunity are all part of the process as well as the actual physical characteristics.
