With regard to private citizens owning firearms for sport or self-defense, 92 percent of the respondents supported civilian gun ownership rights.

Those strike me as two different things: sport and self defense. If the question actually was asked that way, then it's not a very good practice of the polling art.

I doubt very many folk would oppose guns for sport. And even that would need to be broken down to be more specific.
