<As Gould and Eldridge pointed out in their theory of Punctuated Equilibrium (and extension of natural selection), random selection lead to periods in which there is no great change to the species involved.>

If I'm not mistaken the important part of their observation was trying to explain the periods of excellerated change. Some say 'high level' mutation and such things can explain this, to others this is the main sticking point in believing the random mutation story. When I look at 'factals', chaos, etc, and how a simple change in a simple calculation spirals into beautiful endless variation... it seems plausible. OTOH, changing the story to "high level" mutation lessens chances even more of certain peculiar 'mutations' to occur. It would be a complex issue dealing with different 'levels' of mutation... something profoundly simple will probably become apparent as usual.
