I agree with your general view that multiple polls from professional polling outfits (rather than think tanks or lobbyists) give us a decent snapshot of opinion on an issue. A couple of others here disagree.

When I went looking for broad data on gun control, I saw a number around 60% basically "in favor" of it but I don't know which questions were posed, how, or what that could mean for the results.

Clearly, the country is divided on the issue and emotions run high on all sides. If I were picking a country to retire in and guns/no guns was a choice (assuming effective gun control) I would opt for the no gun place, based on my experience.
