True gun control might not have as negative of impact on him, if he makes strong statements against federal gun control. OTOH I think it will still have some negative impact on him, at least his stance keeps him from using "pro-gun" views to try to recover some of the conservatives he loses on the other two issues. I wonder how strong of statements he may have made in the past in support of state level, and more importantly federal level gun control. Such statements might hurt an attempt to "rationalize a situational/federalist stance".
