What level of taxation is considered punitive could of course be debated but many on the left side of the Democratic party support major tax increases esp on "unearned" income. Many also support expanding state social care. Also they are big supporters of unions and benefits for unions, and they generally oppose things like right to work laws. OTOH very few would support state ownership of industry or commerce or mass media.

It's when the relative left of the US position is conflated with the policies common to the international 'left' that I get annoyed.

I understand completely. Calling a Democrat a "socialist" isn't accurate. But we know what is meant by it and unless we're in a cranky mood, which admittedly many partisans constantly are, we accept the usage, be it ignorant, sloppy, chauvinistic, or hyperbolic. Or diminutive, as in "our own little socialists." <g>

One of the problems about characterizing Pelosi's politics these days is that, as minority leader in the house, she is managing a notoriously contentious Dem caucus. Much of what she does and says is meant to bring the various factions together into some sort of shared position, rather than reflecting her own personal positions.
