In low-gun countries you get mostly car thefts and breakins, and home burglaries when the residents aren't home. Plus drugs, which are everywhere. Street assaults happened like everywhere too. There is always a poor guy with a knife in any city of any size.

I never studied the homicide and assault rates in detail but my anecdotal perception was that they were much lower. I know which places I felt safe walking late at night. Maybe there is a reverse correlation that more crime-prone societies attract more people to have and use guns.

Like I said, this is not really a big topic for me. Just reporting my comparative impressions.

You mentioned you lived overseas a lot. Which countries?
