I know you pointed that out several times... I've had no comment as IMHO there is no way of knowing (yet), except through theory, if this is a one way (as you seem to be saying) or two way street. In fact, we may be one word apart on opinion here "the successful variation must already be present"... ie. leave out "the" or put in something like "potential for the" :)

Not if it's random... nor is there any way to know (yet) if 'selectors' can cause or create conditions which facilitate change/cause (mutations?) in the selectees that last into the next generation... although in bacteria I linked in points in that direction.

It's not disappointing at all... if true or untrue, disappointment only comes from a positionality one has invested in... as of now it's unproven... it's theory.
