Your platitudes about liberty and a united government in Iraq sound good (especially to Americans) but you (and Bush and Cheney) misunderstand the nature of trying to impose US, Christian values on a group of people unwilling to accept them.

The insurgents in Iraq are, at least partially, made up of Iraqi patriots fighting against an occupying army. Other segments of the insurgency are religious zealots fighting against a Christian occupier. These people have already proven they will fight the US occupation to the death. It isn't enough to simply agree that US values like liberty and freedom are good and assume Iraqi Muslims will willingly accept these values as their own.

Bush first of all invaded Iraq under false pretenses (WMD) and is now stubbornly trying to validate the mess that is Iraq by switching the goal to democratization. "Freedom" and "liberty" play well in America but in Iraq those words have no meaning to many. Those people will fight the American occupation to the death – for years to come.

And so it goes in Iraq - the American presence generates hostility which generates death and destruction. The US will spin its wheels in Iraq and accomplish the same as it has this last three years - nothing. Finally, one day, it will become so apparent that Iraq is nothing but a waste of time and resources the US will finally leave – but probably not until after Bush is gone.

The burden of success for the insurgents is low. Keeping Iraq messed up seems an easy task. The insurgents are constantly underestimated. They seemingly kidnapped those soldiers at will when they were supposed to be so weakened by Zarcowi’s death.

Iraq will be one sorry stain on the history of the US.
