Environmentalism is big business for some of these folks and organizations. It provides a paycheck to the top people, who then fan the flames of the frenzied true believers to justify their jobs.

Alston Chase devotes an entire chapter to the modern environmental movement in his book, "Playing God in Yellowstone." Anyone not familiar with the movement and the damage it has done should read the book.
