"it was supposed to have been destroyed."

When? (Are you referring to post Desert Storm 'disposition of forces' agreements? Or referring to UN resolutions either pre or post Desert Storm? Not clear on what you are referring to....)

We (the 'West', the world...) has certainly known about the Iraqi's having these gas munitions since they used them to repel 'human wave' attacks of the Iranians in the Basra region near the end of the Iran/Iraq War.

Like I said: no surprise there.

(Now if an inspector were to find evidence for *new* production, or *new* weapons... post Desert Storm when we are widely regarded as having taken-out most of their WMD infrastructure, with the 10 years plus of financial sanctions after that having served to further degrade their military infrastructure and potential; well that would be something quite different and, I believe, very important.)

(PS --- if something has degraded beyond utility by the passage of time and the climate... then does it count as 'destroyed'? Just asking a hypothetical... I'm sure the former Iraqi Minister of Propaganda would have made the legal argument. <GGG>)
