It's rapid spread in America is directly attributable to Republican anti-gay attitudes in the early 80s. During the R convention in 1984 many of uys on the right had bumper stickers saying "AIDs kills all the right people." Even though science said it was not a gay disease, hateful attitudes in government persisted almost to the end of the decade, now every pediatric ICU in the nation has children dying of the disease. Frontline recently did a show on AIDs on the 25th anniversary of its discovery in the U.S. One Center for Disease Control official after another clearly stated that Reagan government attitude to the main victims prevented the center from directing the funds necessary to curb the disease. The second case in America was a woman and child in Florida. AIDs was also spreading in Europe where it was a completely heterosexual disease. Don't blame gay people for its spread in America, it all rests on the so-called Christian right's attitude of "They deserve what they get." Now the disease haunts all of us. I'm sure you know of lots of people that have died of "pneumonia," while it was most probably AIDs. People too ashamed to admist they have the so-called gay disease, when in fact it is a disease like any other. Educate yourself by reading the real science and not some political clap-trap like that Bethell fellow. Honestly, go to any hospital in the nation and ask a doctor about the myth of AIDs. They'll look at you like you are retarded, just as you do here at SI.
