<If Schmue can also climb a rock face using a complex rock climbing strategy and have lunch while sitting on a boulder at the top (his goal), is the boulder intelligent or is the boulder dumb as a rock? >

But the question in my anology is not about "the boulder", in fact there is no boulder in my anaology... except maybe a lockerroom after the game.

<I suspect the analogy to the process of a football game being intelligent is incomplete. I don't see how you have made any better argument for the football game and intelligence than I made for Schmue and the boulder.>

Perhaps a 'process' can't be described as intelligent, only "doers" or "players" can be intelligent? I like this football game analogy because you've got some 'issues' that those opposed to the idea of intelligence in evolution have: Fumbles are "stupid", there may not be an overall 'gameplan' with an end point other than 'win', etc.

"...is the boulder intelligent or is the boulder dumb as a rock?

The boulder is dumb as a rock. However, the goal of reaching the boulder involves intelligence. The goal required a conscious awareness of the various factors in the challenge. It involved awareness of resources and strategy. It involved choice making both in planning and in problem solving enroute to the goal.

So Shmue used intelligence to reach his goal. Did the intelligence come from Shmue or did Shmue's brain tap into it? Did Shmue 'use' the intelligence or did Shmue create it. Is the same intelligence available to other rational beings? If it was available before Shmue, then can we legitimately claim Shmue created it? In either case we cannot claim the possession of this intelligence to be exclusively Shmue's, now. What is the domain of this intelligence?
