The number of mobile users adopting 3G technology service such as WCDMA and CDMA2000 1x EVDO is expected to reach 106 million at the end of this month ? 58 million for WCDMA and 30 million for EVDO. (I have no idea why these dont add up to 106 million <g>)

The user base topped the 50 million mark only 9 months ago, and the 3G market is expected to continue growing fast on investments by such major operators as Hutchison, NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone.

The number of wireless operators offering WCDMA service stands at more than 40 in 100 countries, and some 4 million now turn to the 3G service monthly compared to some 2 million last year.

Korean operators are moving to roll out HSDPA 3.5G service instead, ushering in a videophone era.

In North America, Singular recently launched WCMDA service to gain on Verizon and Sprint Nextel, and the wireless operator plans to introduce HSDPA handsets in the second half of this year. Market analysts forecast that the 3G market will center on asynchronous than synchronous.

"Only some 40 EVDO networks are up and running across the world compared to 105 WCDMA networks," said a manager at LG Electronics. "Telstra of Australia also plans to adopt WCDMA."

Mobile phone companies are also making fast moves. Samsung Electronics, which sold some 4 million units of WCDMA handsets in last year, plans to introduce more than 10 million units of 20 different models this year.

LG Electronics, which ships WCDMA 'LG-CU320' to Singular, plans to expand into HSDPA handsets in the second half of this year. The company also provided the world’s first WCDMA handset supporting NTT DoCoMo’s 3G 'FOMA' in March this year.
