'What surprises me actually is all the rich people living in NYC which is the most highly taxed jurisdiction in the US. Always wonder whether they have some kind of tax shelters to avoid the NYS and NYC taxes.'

They make it up in middleman fees. And cost of doing any business in Manhattan is incredible. The financial capital of the world can get away with it in the same way the fiscal irresponsibilities of the only 'super power' allow it to get away with it.
