I don't know what you mean about QCT being the engine room for patents getting filed. QTL is the engine room for patents. QCT represents the spinco company that they considered spinning off in summer 2001. It was all set up and ready to go with Rick Sulpizio ready to take the helm. Nokia backed down because they realized that the combined company was willing to take lower rates to encourage growth and success of CDMA/WCDMA and or get people to buy Qualcomm chipsets (such as the China deal).

Nokia realized that and backed down and signed. Same possibility is in the wings this time. Paul Jacobs talked about it at the Bear Stearns Conference a week or two ago.
