Sugar cane converts 2% of solar energy in biomass. It was cukltivate up to N. carolina coastal areas. I suspect it lost ground in the US due to being a labor intensive culture, difficult to mechanize, competition from other low cost producers and environmental legislation that put off lands in which it could be cultivated.
