In the book Quntum Evolution, Johnjoe McFadden a molecular biologist gives a simple generalization regarding cancer. From memory: he said generally speaking it is sort of tough to get cancer. It takes 3 gene mutations to cause cancer. But if one inherits one cancerous prone gene it only takes two and is why people can be "prone" to getting cancer.

I know this is simplistic and there is much more, but this provides a way to understand what it takes to get cancer generally speaking.

One cannot even induce cancer in sharks as they have a natural method for cutting off the blood supply to the cancerous cells.

I believe this is a major line science is following now to find a cure for cancer.
