I'll try to be quick as I have to go...

America was built by more than just the founding fathers. It is a fact that while founding principles as described in the DoI and the Constitution are some of the best human ideals, those ideals alone did not build America...try reading up on Andrew Jackson and his treatment of Cherokee. The "Spoils System" was designed to assure victory by recruiting those who'd care more about money than morals. That system and many others like it were a big part of how US was built. Hoodlum would be an understatement for those made use of such systems. I can't remember the reference now, but I think Rockefeller used machine gun on protesting workers (this time the victims were white).

In short, right from the start America had a mixed heritage. There were those who were pushing for the best of human ideals to be applied to everyone...and there were those who cared only about how rich they can get.

As for the Philippines, my statement about the new markets comes straight out of the congressional discussions and letter to and from President Mckinley. It was not just the Philippines itself that was seen as a new market but that it was seen as a foothold into Asian markets. There are a lot of records of torture and massacres...there was absolutely nothing honorable about that war.

Finally, that a certain weakness exists in others does not exonerate us from succumbing to it as well. We may share the shame of it with others, but we should not use the "everyone does it" excuse, or else we will all fall to the lowest common denominator of humanity, and that is not a pretty place to be.
