Oh, you mean "why is the US in Afghanistan, assisting the democratically elected Karzai regime against the resurgent Taliban and various tribal chieftains"? We made a promise, that's why. It may well be that simple geopolitics, pipelines and so forth are in the mix, but I don't think geopolitics are a bad thing. I don't know any country that wants the Taliban back in power in Afghanistan -- there are probably a lot of Salafis who do, but none that I know are in charge of any countries. You might enlighten me as to who's backing the Taliban these days.
