My example was meant to illustrate a larger point; i.e. that it's not necessarily prohibitively expensive to do the right thing environmentally, but that big businesses will usually claim that it is wtihout even trying to find out what the true costs might be.

And when we're dealing with systems that are only partly understood, but where the consequences of inaction might be catastrophic, it seems like erring on the side of caution is the prudent thing to do. Which was the whole idea behind the Kyoto Protocols.

One would think that this argument would ring a loud bell with conservatives, since it is so similar to the one advanced for attacking Iraq. The big difference, of course, is that there is no moral imperative against preemptively trying to prevent an environmental disaster, while there is one against preemptively attacking another country.
