I think if you apply the core and gap theory to a historical time line, it's applicable everywhere. Globalization has only made it a planetary thing.

In my little corner of the world, the McCoys and Hatfields and the rest of the countryside were good candidates way back.

While Barnett is a good read at times, he by no means has a unique concept.

He just very good at applying a combination of the Pentagon way of doing business with real world pragmatism.
