It depends on where I am. If I'm in a red state I would fight for the red state's right for self-determination.

Getting back to reality, the only folks who've talked about seceding have been liberals in the blue states after the last election.

Precisely where did Jerry Falwell say something favorable, or at least uncritical, about Fred Phelps and his program? I don't believe even he would do that.

It wasn't positive. It was something close to the Phelps Baptist Church doesn't represent Christians. Mealy mouthed condemnation IMO.

"the Phelps Baptist Church doesn't represent Christians" is accurate. What more would you want him to say? May he could say Phelps is nuts:

Jerry Falwell called Phelps “nuts” when he showed up outside Falwell’s Liberty Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. Phelps was upset that Falwell had declared that God loves homosexuals.
Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, is a bastion of Christian fundamentalism, but Phelps (himself an alumnus) and his friends have demonstrated outside its campus because it declines to officially ban all homosexuals from visiting the university’s art museum. Phelps has also demonstrated against Oral Roberts University, another conservative Christian school located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“You can’t preach the Bible without preaching hatred,” explains Phelps, who denounced Falwell’s affirmation of divine love as “kissy-pooh stuff.”

Did Fox news report what stupid things Robertson said or do they prefer not to report it?

As I recall they do report such things. I happened to be watching the other night and they had a panel with two liberals from NPR on it - Juan Williams and Mara L-something. IOW the fair and balanced claim is pretty accurate. Unlike the rest of the media and NPR (which I listen to in the morning and have to laugh at the open bias.
