"I have a feeling that shortie's company is family run. His siblings do the real work and he just has to show up." That would explain a lot. He has shown barely enough expertise to swing a shovel. I can see how his family, not wanting the embarrassment of him living on the street, decided to give him an office and a paycheck as long as he didn't come out and try to do something... Its the only thing that makes sense assuming there is a company in which he is a co owner.
