Yes fans another household tip!

Many of you know already that this is the only thing that keeps people here. For newcomers, these tips come with actual tested experiences.

It's now time for yet another Mish Household tip.

I do not recall if I previously posted on clogged garbage disposals.
If not, here is a brief recap of my last experience. I spent at least 2 hours trying to get the damn thing off, gave up and then went online to find this advice:

ehow.com

I tightened everything back together and rather than using a broom handle I used screwdrivers from the top to get it unclogged. I do not know the origin of that clog.

Well it jammed again today and I could not remember what the solution was but at least I remembered not to attempt to take the unit off. I cleverly went online and and said "Oh Yeah I remember this". Unfortunately a screwdriver would not get it unjammed from the top.

I drove to True Value Hardware and asked for a 1/4 inch allen wrench. By looking at what she was giving me I knew it was too small as I had some small ones that size that did not fit. Bonus TIP #2 (tell the hardware guy what you need the tool for). In this case it was a woman not a guy. Anyway she directed me to an allen wrench with two different heads on it specifically designed for garbage disposals. It was in the plumbing section not the hardware section.

The first end did not work but the other end did. Yeah!!!

Tip #3. Do NOT (I repeat do NOT) clean your tennis shoes covered with mud and rocks in the kitchen sink. If you do a rock from your shoes is liable to jam your garbage disposal.

PS I did not notice it. The wife found the problem the next day and I acted innocent even though I knew damn well what happened.

Tip #4. No matter what you think, you or someone is likely do something as stupid as I did. I like the boy scout motto here: Be prepared.

The next time you are in a hardware store simply buy one of those $6.16 tools and throw it under the kitchen sink. If and when your garbage disposal gets clogged, you will be fully prepared.
