Japan and the United States have agreed to speed up deployment of advanced Patriot interceptor missiles on US bases in Japan, officials said Monday, amid concerns that North Korea may test-fire a long-range ballistic missile.

I think my analysis is probably bearing out. We're essentially sending the signal to Pyongyang that if they launch it, we're likely to intercept and destroy it, matching provocation for provocation, without actually targeting the N. Korean mainland.

And the last thing Pyongyang wants to do is risk providing Bush a political and military victory by proving, even in theory, that we have the ability to shoot it down and nullify the threat.

And given that Kim Jong Il has likely placed a tremendous amount of political, as well as economic, capital on this missile, it's too precious to risk having it shot down.
