You are exactly right. The idea of government dictating behavior is ridiculous. Imagine people like President Bush, Teddy Kennedy and John Forbes Kerry who have never achieved anything in business telling businesses how to run themselves better.

Carter's "windfall Profits Tax" is responsible for a significant portion of our current dependence of foreign oil. After he assessed an inventory utilization tax on domestic production it was cheaper to buy foreign oil. Less was pumped domestically and future investments were made in foreign projects to avoid imperial hubris.

Set an even playing field and leave it alone. Some ideas will be more successful than others and businesses that utilize them will grow faster.
